Hypoluxo Island and the homes along the Intracoastal get the same Atlantic salt as the barrier island, carried across the water on the afternoon breeze. It settles on the waterside sliders and on the second-floor glass that faces east, and it is at its worst from late fall through spring when the wind blows steadily from the ocean.
West of Federal Highway the salt fades and the trees take over. Lantana Heights, Sea Pines and the older streets around Sportsman's Park sit under mature oaks, mangoes and seagrapes that drop pollen and sap, and the shaded north sides of homes grow mildew along the frames in the wet season. Around Lake Osborne, the humidity off the lake and well-fed sprinklers leave rust-colored spots on the lower panes.
Most Lantana and Hypoluxo homes do well on a quarterly plan with the inside glass done once a year. Hypoluxo Island and the Intracoastal homes usually want every two months.
